Coming to San Antonio? Need ideas on what to do, where to go and where to stay? I’ve got you covered.
Whether you are just visiting San Antonio or even if you are a local, or whether you visit in the Winter or the Summer, there are really an endless amount of things you can do in the Alamo city and surrounding areas. One of the best ways to visit any city is to get out there and explore, talk to the locals and try new things. And, traveling is always a lot better when you get to save money. Who wants to pay full price for everything they do? I know I don’t. I am always trying to save money, no matter what I am doing or where I am going. You can still stay at some of the nicest places and eat out at the fanciest restaurants and save money too. Who wouldn’t want to do that?
That is why I love using Groupon for everything. Let me say that again . . . I.Love.Groupon, and even as a local, I still like to get a good deal. Groupon is FULL of awesome discounts no matter what you are looking for.
Here is a list of clickable categories for making the most of your time in San Antonio, while saving money:
Bounce & Jump House
Float the many Rivers
Scavenger Hunts / Haunted Houses
I mean come on, did I miss anything?
There is so much to do.
One of the coolest things that you can buy on Groupon for your visit to San Antonio, is a POGO Pass. This pass is a deeply discounted pass to the city that allows you to pay one fee that includes a whole bundle of attractions and venues. The pass is good for one year. So you can buy it now and save it for when you need it. This pass is already available at a discount of $125 but, through Groupon, you can get it for as low as $39.98. Here is an example of what this pass would include (offer may vary depending on when you purchase and this deal is not always available on Groupon).
- $39.98 for One San Antonio Pogo Pass ($124.95 value)
- Pay nothing at gate
- Pogo Pass provides you 12 months of free access to the best entertainment venues in your city

This is beyond an amazing deal. Even for us locals. This is really the only deal that you would need to buy to have a good time during your San Antonio stay. You can check this offer out here.
Here are some of my favorite recommendations of things to do, places to go and stay and where to eat (with and without Groupon deals):
Stand up paddle board – Night Glow SUP
Natural Bridge Caverns
Alamo City Guided Tours
Float the River
River Walk River Tour
One of the many things that San Antonio is known for are the multiple rivers that we have winding through and around the city. If you are from this city, you probably love to float the river. And, even if you don’t love it, you have probably at least done it. You gotta do it at least once.
You must visit the Historic Pearl Brewery conveniently located in the heart of downtown San Antonio. Multiple restaurants and shops. There is a Farmers Market every Saturday morning. Often they have live music and events on Saturday nights. Every first Thursday of the month, there are events and specials. Open courtyard and grassy area for picnics and a splashpad for the kids to cool off in, while you sip on a refreshing cocktail from one of the many restaurants.
Bakery Lorraine – a top notch bakery that offers high quality baked goods and a full menu for breakfast and lunch. Grab a croissant and a coffee or a sandwich and a salad; and don’t forget their infamous macaroons.
Myron’s Prime Steakhouse – a delicious dining experience where the chocolate cake is as good as the steak. Voted San Antonio’s best steakhouse. If beef is what you are craving, then Myron’s is where you want the savings. Oh that was corny but, really this is a good deal for such a yummy steakhouse.
Magic Time Machine – A unique dining experience where all the waiters and waitresses dress up like different characters. You never know who you will get to serve you. Like their slogan says “not just a restaurant, it’s an adventure”
Silo’s Elevated Cuisine – Fine dining. From signature chicken fried oysters and jumbo lump crab cakes to pecan crusted chicken breasts and cider braised kurobuta pork shank, there is something for everyone here.
Smoke the restaurant – If Texas bbq is what you are looking for, then look no further. How does Dr. Pepper pork ribs and succulent beef brisket sound? Yeah, my mouth is watering too.
Pat O’Briens – Cajun-inspired food, including shrimp creole and traditional jambalaya. Located downtown. Famous for their Hurricanes – a fruity rum based drink that will put you on your butt. Sounds like a plan, doesn’t it?
Places to stay
The Hotel Emma –
I absolutely adore this Hotel. Located on the river at the Pearl. Once an old brewhouse. Check out their website to get more detail and view photos. I just can’t say enough about this hotel. They have 3 restaurants/bars and offer events and cooking classes. Plus a lovely upscale gift shop called Curio. Truly a divine experience you will have (did you catch that Yoda reference?)
Hotel Valencia Riverwalk –
This beautiful 4 star hotel is located directly on the river at the River walk. Gorgeous design and ambiance. Free breakfast. Spa services on site. Restaurant, Bar and coffee shop. A very upscale experience. Steps away from the Majestic Theatre.
The Emily Morgan –
Conveniently located right across the street from the Alamo. Dubbed the third most haunted hotel in the world by USA Today. The World. So if that is your thing, this place is for you. We stayed here for my birthday last year and had a really nice time but, we didn’t get to see anything out of the ordinary.
Check out this post from Ghost City Tours on all the Haunted Hotels in San Antonio. Apparently we have a lot.
Wyndham San Antonio Riverwalk –
Another great downtown hotel. 4 stars with a 3 star price. Conveniently located on the river. Texas Style cuisine, rooftop pool, outdoor hot tub overlooking the San Antonio skyline, breakfast buffet – including omelet station (what? what?)
On the outskirts of town – If you aren’t looking to stay directly downtown, may I suggest:
JW San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa –
Located approximately 20 miles from downtown and about 14 miles northeast of the airport. This spacious hill country resort has a lot to offer with something for everyone, from a 9 acre water park with a lazy river for the kids and adults, a 36 hole golf course, seven restaurants and a high end spa. You won’t want to leave.
Drury Plaza Hotel San Antonio North Stone Oak – Another really nice hotel located away from downtown on the north side. Includes outdoor pool and fitness center. Located by many shops and restaurants. Close to highway 281.
Hilton Garden Inn San Antonio – This hotel is located on the northeast side of San Antonio, about 20 minutes from downtown. Includes business center, fitness room and pool. Walking distance from the Forum shopping center, a Starbucks and many restaurants. This is a great location to stay if you are planning on going floating while you are here. It is conveniently located halfway between downtown and all the rivers, without having to forgo any amenities. Conveniently located by I-35 and loop 1604.
Courtyard by Marriott San Antonio Six Flags at The Rim – A beautiful hotel located closer to the Northwest side of San Antonio, right off of I-10. Minutes away from Six Flags and The Rim shopping center. Includes a restaurant, bar and coffee shop; an outdoor pool and fitness facilities.
*Whenever I can’t find what I am looking for on Groupon, I check out Expedia for really big savings. I have booked hotels and packages through them many times and I have always been satisfied.
The prices and specials change all the time but, one thing you can always count on, you can always find a good deal.
If you have never used Groupon before, do not miss out on saving money ever again. There is no reason to go any longer without it. Bookmark this link Groupon and click on it every time you want to go somewhere, stay somewhere, do something; no matter where you live or what you want to do. Not only do you save but, they give you great ideas and recommendations. How did I ever live without it?
This is what I love about Groupon. . . .
They offer customer reviews and ratings
It is easy to use
They always offer suggestions related to your location or category purchase.
Groupon wants your honest opinion and encourages feedback
Just a few tips when using Groupon:
My goal isn’t to sale you Groupon deals. I want to save you money and give you ideas and recommendations of where to go, what to do and where to stay. So I always recommend doing your research before buying through Groupon. Make sure that you are getting the best deal before you buy. Go directly to the hotel, company or event’s website and check out their deals too. Maybe they have a cheaper rate than Groupon. More often than not, Groupon will have the better deal but, you never know.
Read the reviews on Groupon. One thing that I always do before I go somewhere or buy something, is read the reviews, if they offer them. People will always be honest about their experience and I like that.
Read the fine print on the deals before you buy them. Make sure that you understand the promotional guidelines and expiration dates.
Check the ratings for that particular deal before you buy it. Always do your research and make sure that you are indeed getting the best deal.
Groupon isn’t just exclusive to your city or to Restaurants and events, they offer specials and deals for virtually any location around the world and in so many categories from spa visits and discounted merchandise to oil changes and much much more . . .
I hope that you found this practical travel guide of savings and recommendations useful and that you enjoy your stay in San Antonio. It is such a beautiful city with so much to offer and so many things to do. I would love to hear what your experience was like during your visit. So leave me a comment and let me know.
