Do you ever get those cravings for something sweet, decadent and probably not good for you?
When your stomach has a craving –
You Answer It.
I made some delicious cakey Old Fashion Sour Cream Donuts tonight.
I try to cook healthy and eat well but, I love to bake and I have been cursed with a sweet tooth. So here I am.
My husband just turned 41 last week and he wouldn’t let me make him a birthday cake. I always make my husband and my boy’s birthday cakes. My husband was only half right when he said (you only want to make me a cake so you can eat some). Yes. I do want some cake but, I also feel joyful when I make their special birthday desserts.
Since I didn’t get to make an awesome cake to nibble off of for the week to come, I made something else. Once I got my mind set on pastries and sweets, I couldn’t stop thinking about making something. I was really close to trying my hand at eclairs or cream puffs. However, I love a good sour cream donut and I found this recipe by a super cute food blog called Handle the Heat and thought, (what the hell? I’ll try it out.)
I was trying not to wake Jax during his nap and made this dough recipe the old fashion way too. With some good old elbow grease. That was trickier. I would suggest using a hand mixer or even better a stand mixer if you can pull it off. It certainly would have made this recipe easier. But, don’t let the lack of silly modern appliances stop you from making anything. Where there is a donut, there is a way!
I didn’t have any biscuit cutters, round cookie cutters or donut cutters.
I had to use my brain.
I used a mason jar lid ring for the big cutout and I used the large opening on one of my large Wilton icing tips to cut out the center donut hole. Hey, it worked.
I do think I may have made my donuts a little bigger than the recipe would have liked because I was only able to make 8 donuts out of the batch. I am not complaining. I certainly don’t need 12. But, something to keep in mind.
I also added a couple drops of almond extract and a teaspoon of vanilla bean paste to my glaze. It’s divine!
I could definitely use some practice for making them like a bakery but, pretty damn good for my first time. I keep eating them, so they can’t be that bad. Here is the link to the Recipe. Try these old fashion sour cream donuts out for yourself. Let me know what you think, if you made them better, made some changes. I definitely plan to make these again. I can see now where to improve. I would start with a little less flour next time. My dough was slightly on the dry side.
Baking takes practice. So don’t get discouraged if your results aren’t what you expected. Try again. That is how you get really good.
Food is life.
Share your yummy results with friends, family and neighbors.
My favorite part.
